The Intensive Management Unit / Segregation Unit (IMU/SEG) of the Washington State Correctional Center in Monroe is a 200-bed facility designed to house the state's most difficult prisoners. This maximum security building was constructed almost entirely out of pre-cast concrete panels; all the electrical systems had to be imbedded in the concrete at the Puyallup area casting plant, or concealed in locked chases away from the 'customers'. This presented a number of challenges, as typical construction procedures simply would not work for this project.
The general contractor, Absher Construction, built a life-size wooden mockup of a typical 2-cell layout so that the plumbing, ductwork, electrical, and low voltage systems could all be laid out and arranged for a complimentary fit. This proved to be a vital step in the successful construction of this complex facility, as it became apparent that a complete redesign of the layout for the chases was required.
This was the crown jewel of several successful projects Mastercraft has completed recently at the Monroe Correctional Center.
